Question 1

What is naturista?

Accepted Answer

Naturista makes the world's first dissolvable, 100% naturally biodegradable coffee pod. A normal coffee capsule is plastic and aluminium bonded together. It cannot be recycled at home, it sheds microplastics into hot coffee, and it sits in landfill for centuries. Naturista replaces that entire shell with one natural material called pullulan, which dissolves in water and breaks down in soil within days. There are two products. The machine pod is the same size and shape as a standard capsule and works in the brewer you already own. The instant pod dissolves in a mug of hot water in seconds, with no machine at all. It was founded in December 2024 by Karan Verma and Aditya Herekar, has a provisional patent filed and is utility patent pending, and the research behind it is peer reviewed and published.

Question 2

What is pullulan?

Accepted Answer

Pullulan is a natural polymer made of sugar units linked into a chain. It is produced by feeding starch and leftover agricultural plant material to a common fungus called Aureobasidium pullulans. The fungus releases pullulan as it grows. That is then filtered, purified and dried into a clear, tasteless white powder which can be cast into a thin film. That film does three useful things at once: 1. It blocks oxygen well enough to keep roasted coffee fresh without needing a foil lid. 2. It holds its shape in hot water long enough to brew through. 3. Because it is fundamentally a sugar, it dissolves completely in water and is eaten by soil bacteria in days rather than centuries. Chemically it is a chain of glucose units: every three form a maltotriose block joined by alpha 1,4 bonds, and those blocks link to each other by alpha 1,6 bonds. Empirical formula (C6H10O5)n, repeating unit maltotriose C18H32O16, CAS 9057-02-7, food additive code INS 1204. It is not an experimental material. Pullulan is already what breath strips and some pill capsules are made from, and it is a prebiotic dietary fibre.

Question 3

Is it safe?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Pullulan is already used in food and medicine, including breath strips and pill capsules. The US Food and Drug Administration reviewed pullulan for general use in food and responded with no questions, under GRAS Notice GRN 000099, closed in August 2002. That is the formal record. One precise point worth making, because it matters if a judge or a journalist asks: the correct phrasing is that pullulan is the subject of a GRAS notice to which the FDA responded with no questions. "FDA approved" is not technically the right term for a GRAS notification, and using the precise wording is stronger, not weaker. Pullulan is also tasteless and odourless, so it does not change how the coffee tastes.

Question 4

What is the machine pod?

Accepted Answer

The machine pod is built to the same size and shape as a standard single serve capsule, so it drops into the brewer you already own. No adapter, no modification, no change to how you make coffee. How it works: 1. Load it into any standard single serve machine. 2. Brew it. The shell holds its shape against hot water and pressure for the full cycle. The coffee tastes the same. 3. Compost it. Put it in the garden or the compost bin. It breaks down in days. No sorting, no peeling a foil lid off, no industrial composting facility. Specifications: breaks down in days, releases no microplastics, works in existing machines, home compostable.

Question 5

What is the instant pod?

Accepted Answer

The instant pod is a measured dose of coffee sealed inside a thin pullulan shell. Drop it into hot water and the shell dissolves in seconds, releasing the coffee as it goes. There is no capsule to pull out, no filter, and no machine needed. The packaging becomes part of the drink. 1. Drop it in. One pod into a mug of hot water. 2. Stir. The shell dissolves in seconds and the coffee disperses with it. 3. Nothing left. Nothing to bin, nothing to rinse, nothing to recycle. Specifications: dissolves in seconds, no microplastics, no machine required, zero waste left over.

Question 6

Does it taste different?

Accepted Answer

No. Pullulan is tasteless and odourless, which is a large part of why it was chosen over the alternatives. The machine pod also keeps its shape through the whole brew rather than breaking apart into the cup, so the extraction happens the same way it does in a conventional capsule. In a consumer survey of more than 2,000 people with 1,270 responses, 98% said they noticed no difference in taste, and 97% said ease of use was the same or better.

Question 7

How long does it take to break down?

Accepted Answer

The machine pod breaks down in days in soil or a home compost heap. The instant pod does not need disposal at all, because it dissolves into the drink. The distinction that matters is against pods marketed as "compostable". Those genuinely do break down, but a controlled study found complete degradation took 46 days and only happened inside an industrial composting operation with piles several metres high, turned every other day and left to mature for six months. A home compost heap cannot reproduce that. Worse, a study of the Dutch waste system, one of the most developed in Europe, found that most of the organic waste industry there will not accept compostable coffee capsules at all. So in practice many of them go to landfill anyway. Pullulan does not have that problem, because it is water soluble and breaks down under ordinary conditions.

Question 8

What about microplastics?

Accepted Answer

Brewing forces water at roughly 96 degrees through a plastic capsule under pressure, and heat is what pulls polymer out of packaging. A 2025 peer reviewed study of retail beverages in the UK found microplastics in every one of 155 samples tested. Hot coffee averaged 43 particles per litre and hot tea 60, against 17 for soft drinks. Hot drinks carried significantly more than cold ones, which points directly at temperature. The most common polymer found was polypropylene, which is what most coffee capsules are made from. Naturista contains no plastic at all, so there is no polymer in the brew path to shed. Citation: Al-Mansoori, Harrad and Abdallah, Science of the Total Environment, 2025.

Question 9

What is the problem?

Accepted Answer

A coffee capsule is a laminate: a plastic cup, an oxygen barrier layer and an aluminium lid, bonded so tightly they cannot be pulled apart again. That bond is exactly the problem. It is what keeps the coffee fresh, and it is also what makes the pod impossible to recycle in a normal household bin. The layers cannot be separated mechanically, and the spent coffee grounds contaminate whatever is recovered. More than 80 billion pods are made every year, most of them plastic and aluminium. That figure is an industry estimate reported in journalism rather than a peer reviewed measurement, and Naturista labels it as an estimate wherever it is used. On top of the waste, there is what the plastic does while you are drinking. See the microplastics answer for the measured figures.

Question 10

What research have you done?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The research is published and peer reviewed. Comparative Analysis of Biopolymer Candidates for Sustainable Coffee Pod Manufacturing, by Karan Verma and Aditya Herekar, Future Scholars Journal, published 23 June 2026. DOI 10.61340/fsj.2026.08. The study combined two things: laboratory testing of biopolymer film samples made by the founders, and a review of the published literature on each candidate. Nine materials were scored against six criteria. Pullulan, polyvinyl alcohol and sodium alginate all dissolved and broke down well. Polylactic acid and cellulose were strongest under pressure. Only pullulan scored well on every criterion at once, which is why it became the pod. The paper states its own limits: testing was done under controlled conditions, and the figures on manufacturing at scale come from published literature rather than a factory run.

Question 11

What criteria did you test?

Accepted Answer

Every candidate material was scored on six things. Failing any one of them was disqualifying, which is what eliminated most of the field. 1. Break down naturally in soil or a home compost heap, not only in an industrial plant. 2. Dissolve in water completely, and fast enough to be useful in a cup. 3. Hold a shape, so it can be cast or moulded into a capsule that keeps its geometry. 4. Survive heat, staying intact against water at brewing temperature under pressure. 5. Be safe in food, with established food contact safety and no common allergen or dietary restriction. 6. Scale up, meaning available and affordable enough to make billions of pods a year.

Question 12

What materials did you test?

Accepted Answer

Nine materials were tested. Eight failed on at least one criterion. Pullulan dissolved completely, held its shape hot, is food safe, and breaks down at home. Selected. Polyvinyl alcohol dissolved readily and broke down well, but it is a synthetic polymer. Putting manufactured plastic in a product sold as plastic free defeats the point. Sodium alginate dissolved well but the film was too weak to hold shape under brewing pressure. Polylactic acid had the strongest structural performance of the group, but only composts in an industrial facility, which is the exact problem Naturista set out to solve. Cellulose is strong and widely available but does not dissolve in water, so it leaves a capsule behind. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose is a good film former used in capsules, but there was too little margin between brewing temperature and the point where the film softens. Gelatin forms films easily but is animal derived, which rules it out for a large share of coffee drinkers. Seaweed extract is natural and biodegradable but carries an allergy risk and behaved inconsistently at brewing temperature. Chitosan is natural and antimicrobial but is derived from shellfish, so it carries a serious allergy risk.

Question 13

How many prototypes?

Accepted Answer

More than two hundred prototypes were built and destroyed over about eighteen months, on kitchen counters in New Jersey and Texas. Biopolymers were ordered online and the moulds were improvised. The pattern that kept repeating was a trade off. Materials that dissolved quickly collapsed under pressure. Materials that held up under pressure would not break down outside an industrial composter. Getting past that meant changing one variable at a time: film thickness, casting method, drying time, mould geometry. In January 2025 a pullulan formulation finally held its shape through a full brew cycle and then dissolved on demand. That was the breakthrough.

Question 14

Who founded naturista?

Accepted Answer

Naturista was founded by two high school students. Aditya Herekar, co-founder, based in New Jersey. Karan Verma, co-founder, based in Texas. It started as a school project about where household waste actually ends up. The answer for coffee pods was worse than expected, and they were both drinking from them every morning. The entire research programme ran out of two kitchens in two different states. They have since presented it to university panels, foundation juries and international competition boards across three countries.

Question 15

What awards have you won?

Accepted Answer

Naturista has won competitions across three countries since March 2025, raising $35,350 in total, all of it non-dilutive prize and grant funding. Mott Million Dollar Challenge, June 2026, Flint, Michigan. Grand prize in the Social Challenge for grades 9 to 12, from a field of more than 2,500 high school students nationwide. Diamond Challenge, 2026. Semifinalist in one of the largest high school entrepreneurship competitions in the world. BIG Idea Competition, December 2025, Northern State University. First place, out of state division. SAGE World Cup 2025, September 2025, Tbilisi, Georgia. Third place worldwide against national champions from roughly 30 countries. Citizen Entrepreneurship Competition 2025, September 2025, Stiftung Entrepreneurship, Germany. Second place, Silver award. SAGE USA National Tournament, May 2025. First place in the United States, which qualified the team for the World Cup. Blue Ocean Student Entrepreneur Competition, April 2025. Global top 30 out of more than 22,000 entrants from 170 countries. Jacobson Institute Innovator Competition, spring 2025, University of Iowa. Third place.

Question 16

Tell me about the mott award?

Accepted Answer

The Mott Million Dollar Challenge is a competition created by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation for its 100th anniversary, with a total prize pool of one million dollars. Naturista won the grand prize in the Social Challenge category for grades 9 to 12 at the live finals in Flint, Michigan on 15 and 16 June 2026. The competition drew more than 3,700 submitted pitches. It is the largest single result Naturista has had. It is the most covered result Naturista has: the Mott Foundation's own release, PR Newswire, ABC12 in Flint, the NBC and FOX affiliate, and Yahoo Finance all reported it.

Question 17

Tell me about sage?

Accepted Answer

SAGE stands for Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship. It runs national tournaments and then a global final. Naturista won the SAGE USA National Tournament in May 2025, taking first place in the United States, which qualified the team to represent the country. At the SAGE World Cup 2025 in Tbilisi, Georgia, on 12 to 14 September, Naturista placed third in the world against national champions from roughly 30 countries, . The result is confirmed by the Georgian host organisation and independently by Irish press covering the second place team from Tullamore College.

Question 18

Who has written about you?

Accepted Answer

There are 25 published items, all linked on the press page. The most significant: the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation's own release, PR Newswire carrying it nationally, ABC12 television in Flint, the NBC / FOX affiliate broadcast, Yahoo Finance for business audiences. Internationally, the Offaly Express and Ireland Live in Ireland covered the SAGE World Cup result, and Stiftung Entrepreneurship in Germany announced the Citizen Entrepreneurship award. Regionally, Hub City Radio, Aberdeen Insider and Dakota Broadcasting in South Dakota covered the BIG Idea Competition, and Northern State University published the results. Plus the peer reviewed paper in Future Scholars Journal. Everything on the press page links to the original source. None of it is written by Naturista.

Question 19

Is it patented?

Accepted Answer

Naturista has a provisional patent filed and is utility patent pending. The provisional application covers the design and formulation of both pod formats.

Question 20

How do you make money?

Accepted Answer

The plan is to license the material to the manufacturers who already produce billions of pods a year, at roughly two cents per pod, rather than try to outsell them. That gets the material into existing supply chains far faster than building a competing consumer brand would.

Question 21

How much does it cost?

Accepted Answer

On current small scale production, a pullulan pod shell costs roughly 5 to 9 cents per unit, against 3 to 5 cents for a conventional plastic and aluminium shell. Those figures are for the empty shell, not the coffee inside. That gap is expected to close with volume. There is no retail price yet, because the product is pre-commercial.

Question 22

Can i buy it?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Classic and dark roast instant pods are available now; the machine brew pod follows soon. You can join the list on the About page to hear about first production runs. The same address handles licensing enquiries and research questions: contact@naturistacoffeepods.com.

Question 23

When did you start?

Accepted Answer

March 2024 Research initiated. Material screening begins on nine candidate biopolymers. January 2025 First functional prototype. A pullulan capsule survives a full extraction cycle. Spring 2025 First competition wins begin funding the work. April and May 2025 Blue Ocean global top 30, SAGE USA national win, Jacobson Institute third place. September 2025 Third at the SAGE World Cup in Tbilisi, Silver at the Citizen Entrepreneurship Competition. July 2026 Provisional patent filed. Utility patent pending. December 2025 First place, out of state, at the BIG Idea Competition. June 2026 Grand prize at the Mott Million Dollar Challenge. Paper published in Future Scholars Journal.

Question 24

Who are your competitors?

Accepted Answer

Traditional plastic and aluminium capsules hold roughly 85% of the market. Bio-alternatives hold about 15%. The existing bio-alternatives are cellulose, seaweed based materials and polylactic acid. Each one solves part of the problem and fails somewhere else. The five gaps they leave are: allergy safety, needing no industrial composting, preserving taste and freshness, working in existing machines, and staying stable under heat. Naturista is the only one that closes all five, and the only one that dissolves in water rather than merely degrading eventually. Against a conventional pod: same machine compatibility, same taste, but days instead of centuries to break down, no microplastics, and compostable at home.

Question 25

What is the environmental impact?

Accepted Answer

Each Naturista pod sold prevents an estimated 10 to 30 grams of greenhouse gas emissions compared with a conventional capsule, and removes one laminate shell from the landfill stream permanently. Naturista maps to four United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: 3 good health and well-being, 11 sustainable cities and communities, 12 responsible consumption and production, and 13 climate action. The framing the team uses is planet, people and purpose. Planet is the waste. People is a brew path with no synthetic polymer in it. Purpose is licensing the material broadly instead of gatekeeping it.

Question 26

How big is the market?

Accepted Answer

The global coffee pod market is about $35.3 billion. The North American share is about $7.38 billion. The realistic initial segment, eco-conscious pod users, is about $67 million. The target customer is 16 to 70, all genders with a slight female skew, urban and suburban, in the United States and Canada, environmentally conscious but unwilling to sacrifice taste or convenience. In a survey of over 2,000 people with 1,270 responses, 86.4% named microplastics as their biggest concern with conventional pods, and 95% said they would try an eco-friendly option.

Question 27

Did you survey people?

Accepted Answer

Naturista surveyed more than 2,000 people and received 1,270 responses. 86.4% named microplastics as their biggest concern with conventional coffee pods. 95% said they would try an eco-friendly alternative. 98% reported no difference in taste with the Naturista pod. 97% said ease of use was the same or better.

Question 28

How do i contact you?

Accepted Answer

Email contact@naturistacoffeepods.com. That address handles product questions, licensing enquiries, research questions and press. For press specifically, Naturista can supply product photographs, video of both pods brewing and dissolving, the published paper, and interviews with either founder.

Question 29

What are your sources?

Accepted Answer

The main sources behind the claims on this site: FDA GRAS Notice GRN 000099 for pullulan's food safety record. JECFA 65th meeting, 2005 for how pullulan is produced and specified. Al-Mansoori, Harrad and Abdallah, 2025, Science of the Total Environment, for microplastics in hot drinks. Kooduvalli, Vaidya and Ozcan, 2020, Scientific Reports, for compostable pods needing industrial facilities. Thoden van Velzen and others, 2023, Wageningen report 2450, for waste systems refusing compostable capsules. Herekar and Verma, 2026, Future Scholars Journal, DOI 10.61340/fsj.2026.08, the Naturista study itself. One figure is deliberately labelled as an estimate rather than a finding: the claim that more than 80 billion pods are made per year traces to journalism, not a peer reviewed measurement. Naturista uses it because it is the most widely cited number available, and flags it as an estimate.

Question 30

Why is it called naturista?

Accepted Answer

The name comes from the idea of doing coffee naturally: a pod made of something that came from plants and goes back to the soil, rather than something engineered to outlast the person drinking from it. The tagline the team uses is "Brewing boldly, naturally."

Question 31

Can you make it at scale?

Accepted Answer

That is the open question, and Naturista is straightforward about it. The published paper explicitly lists as a limitation that its scalability data comes from published literature rather than from an industrial production run. Everything proven so far was proven on a small scale. What supports the case: pullulan is already manufactured commercially for the food and pharmaceutical industries, so the material itself is produced at volume today. The unknown is the pod forming process, not the raw material.

Question 32

What are the weaknesses?

Accepted Answer

Being honest about this is more persuasive than pretending there are none. Stage. It is a prototype, not a product on a shelf. Manufacturing at scale is unproven. Cost. Roughly 5 to 9 cents per shell against 3 to 5 for conventional. That gap has to close with volume. Founders' age. The founders are high school students, which raises legitimate questions about execution capacity and creates legal and contracting friction. Incumbents. Large coffee companies can greenwash, launch competing formats, or simply outspend. Consumer scepticism about eco claims is real and earned. Supply. Pullulan is produced commercially but by relatively few suppliers, which is a concentration risk. The licensing model is partly a response to several of these. It routes around needing to build manufacturing and distribution from nothing.

Question 33

How are you funded?

Accepted Answer

Naturista has raised $35,350, entirely from competition prizes and grants. No equity has been given up, there are no investors and there is no debt. It came from competition wins across three countries. The awards page lists every result. The long term model is licensing the material to manufacturers who already make billions of pods a year.

Question 34

What sdgs?

Accepted Answer

Naturista maps to four United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 3, good health and well-being, by removing synthetic polymer from the brew path. SDG 11, sustainable cities and communities, by cutting a high volume household waste stream. SDG 12, responsible consumption and production, by sourcing from starch and agricultural waste. SDG 13, climate action, through the emissions avoided per pod.

Question 35

What pages are on this site?

Accepted Answer

Seven pages. About Naturista covers what the product is, the two pods and why it matters. Awards lists the competition results and the funding raised, with sources. Press has every published article, ranked by reach. Research covers the published paper, what pullulan is, the six criteria, the nine candidate materials, the prototype record, the full source list and the paper's own bibliography. Gallery is photographs. Team is the two founders. And this page, which answers questions about any of it.

What do you want to know about Naturista?
